What is a Personal Life Coach? - How are therapy and coaching connected?

A life coach helps individuals and families define values, set goals, and plan for change. Whereas therapists help clients resolve problems from the past, personal life coaches look to the future and are solution / action-oriented. Coaches help you to develop the strategies and skills needed to achieve your goals.

I work at the  at the edge between therapy and coaching ,drawing on different tools and disciplines  to help you achieve personal and professional creative excellence.

It is undeniable that negative emotions and beliefs greatly impact every aspect of our lives especially our personal performance. When we are angry, stressed, anxious or fearful, these feelings get in the way of our functioning at our best. Sometimes it is essential to explore the roots of these blocks.

Many people have discovered that many of their core beliefs are shame based, and in a frantic attempt to achieve their goals and become human doings the real self goes into hiding. Whether you call it your 'inner child,' 'the divine child,'  your  'higher self' , or just  'The Self ' (as Jung called it),  unless we can reconnect with this hidden or abandoned part of ourselves,we may well feel that we are living an unlived life, forever entangled in the knots of 'should' 'ought' and 'must', and lacking any felt sense of who we really are .Change  does not happen over night. Re-discovery takes time. As John Bradshaw, in Healing the Shame That Binds You has so inspirationally pointed out, shame is toxic.

Personal Performance

It is undeniable that negative emotions impact on almost every aspect of our lives, especially  personal performance. Anger, stress, anxiety and fear make it hard for us to function at our best.

Top athletes and performers know the power of the mind in their work. While an athlete’s skill or a performer’s talent doesn’t vary from day to day, their  performance certainly can. Athletic coaches will tell you ‘it's the mental part of the game that separates winners from losers’. Whatever your ‘performance’ - tennis, public speaking, music, acting, being more effective at work, or  being a better parent or spouse, working on your ‘performance’ can help you do your best.

Awareness is the beginning of change:

Change happens when we explore and examine our past - our family of origin and  childhood experiences and begin to understand what we made of them. Like archaeologists, we can unearth layers of unconscious and deeply held negative beliefs, called rackets or schemas or archetypal patterns,  that act like life scripts.  They rule our behaviour and our expectations and dominate our lives. Sometimes this can be good, when they help us survive but, more often, these scripts, which are no longer relevant influence us negatively.

Change takes time,  patience and practice.
